Parque Biológico de Vila Nova de Gaia (Bio Park)

The Parque Biológico de Vila Nova de Gaia (Biological Park of Vila Nova de Gaia) is a remarkable Environmental Education center, a pioneer in Portugal. Located in the parishes of Avintes and Vilar de Andorinho, it covers about 35 hectares of agro-forestry area, following the valley of the Febros River.

Its main goal is to showcase nature close to the city, without being a traditional zoo or botanical garden. It offers a nature discovery trail of approximately 3 kilometers/1,86 miles, where visitors can observe the regional fauna and flora in semi-liberty, including amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles, as well as diverse habitats. The Park hosts wild species and operates as a recovery center.

In addition to contact with biodiversity, the Park values cultural heritage, with the presence of windmills, rural houses, and traditional watermills ("engenhos de buchas"). It actively promotes awareness of environmental issues through exhibitions, activities, and programs for schools. It is a true "green lung" and a multifunctional space that integrates biodiversity conservation, culture, and leisure.
